Breeam & MacBright

BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) is the leading and most used global method for the measurement of the environmental performances of buildings. It establishes the best practice standard in sustainable design and is the de facto yardstick to describe a building’s environmental performance.

BREEAM was developed by the Centre for Sustainable Construction; part of the British BRE.

Assessment

Grouped in the following categories and via a variety of topics, buildings are assessed in both the development and delivery phases:

Management
Health and comfort
Energy
Transport
Water
Materials
Wastage
Land use and ecology
Pollution

Each category and each topic (named “credit”) is elaborated in detail in this assessment guideline. Sustainability objectives are defined for each credit, listing a number of criteria that must be adhered to. Points can be attributed to aspects that meet the criteria, starting with a 1-star “pass” score (>30%) and ending with a 5-star “outstanding” (>85%) score.
